Functional Adult Literacy
Our FAL project is designed for marginalized youth and adults who missed out on formal education, seeking to address the literacy, numeracy and livelihoods needs of these people. A maximum of 25 learners or students are placed in a “study circle” or class, and depending on the size of the community, 1 or 2 study circles are established in each of the targeted communities. Each study circle is managed by a Community Literacy Facilitator who is selected by the community leaders in collaboration with SHIFSD’s field staff.
As partners in progress, SHIFSD adopts and uses a hybrid of relevant adult literacy materials and methodologies developed and tested by world renown educationists and literacy providers during a 6-14day period of initial training of literacy facilitators who then go to provide 9-15month literacy skills training to their respective communities following the training of trainers (TOT) workshops.
Our learners receive literacy and numeracy skills in FAL Levels 1 and 2. Level One which is also referred to as the Zero Level runs for 9 months while the Level 2 goes for 6 months. A special curriculum is used by the facilitators to facilitate the learning process. Beneficiaries who complete FAL level 1 or 2 are able to read and construct simple sentences and perform basic calculations such addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
Between 2011 and 2019 we have provided functional adult literacy skills to well over 2200 adults and young people in five counties including Grand Gedeh, Bong, Margibi, Gbapolu and Montserrado.
